Life after Death

2025 Senior Thesis - Hollins University

This body of work is a collection of alternative photographs that explore themes of deconstruction, repurposing, and reincarnation. Through scans of deconstructed polaroids and gold-painted insects, I seek to transform ephemeral materials into digital works. This project pays homage to the instantaneous quality of film-based photography, as it becomes translated and enhanced through modern technology. By creating digital images of materials that are temporary and precious by nature, I seek to capture the idea of being born again. I collect insects that were found deceased; it is important to my process that their death was not for the sake of this work, but rather their presence happened by chance. My fascination with the reflective qualities in the plastic of polaroids, combined with the metallic gold used to emphasize the insect’s features transforms these items into relics. I am seeking ways to capture life in artifacts that were never meant to last, to honor the fleeting by capturing it in a new light.
